Good dental hygiene for Chicago area residents involves several important steps, including the toothbrush that is used. Not all toothbrushes are created equal, nor do they last forever. So despite what some may think, the choices made about a toothbrush can in fact influence oral health either positively or negatively.

Dr. Jackson from The Chicago Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry highlights four factors to keep in mind about the toothbrush you use.

1.Shape and Size—Your toothbrush should have a head that fits comfortably into the mouth and that allows easy access to reach and clean all surfaces of the teeth. Often times, toothbrushes with small to medium sized heads allow for better maneuvering in hard to reach areas, such as the back molars of the mouth.

2.Bristles—Rounded tip bristles have been proven to provide superior cleaning and protection from tooth decay. Most patients benefit from using a soft bristled toothbrush, as hard bristled toothbrushes can cause damage to the gums and root surface by individuals who brush vigorously.

3.Safety Standards—Don’t buy a toothbrush just because it’s the cheapest one available. Using a toothbrush that’s approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) ensures that the bristles will have safe tips and can effectively reduce plaque build up and gum disease when used properly.

4.Make A Change—Toothbrushes are not invincible. The ADA recommends exchanging your toothbrush every 3-4 months or even sooner if the bristles appear worn. This ensures optimal cleaning results with your toothbrush. It is wise to also change your toothbrush after you’ve been sick, to help prevent collecting germs that can lead to re-infection.

Of course brushing is only part of a good program of good dental hygiene. Chicago area residents also benefit from regular dental examinations and cleanings. Dr. Jackson can provide that needed assistance to keep your smile in optimum health.
