You’re pregnant! You excitedly call friends and family about the great news, but do you remember to call your dentist? In the Lake Zurich area, Dr. Johnson and his team have helped educate many as to what to expect, and how to care for their oral health during pregnancy.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can have a negative impact on teeth and gums. What can be expected while you are pregnant?

1. Increased risk- Women are more likely to develop gingivitis (infection of the gums) during their pregnancy than before. The gums may also be more likely to bleed a little during flossing and brushing. If left untreated, this infection can also lead to problems with the teeth and the bone that they are attached to. Therefore, it has been recommended that a pregnant woman should visit the dentist more frequently in order to receive preventative oral examinations and professional cleaning.

2. Pregnancy Tumors- Lumps that may appear along the gum line and between teeth. These may bleed easily but they are neither harmful nor cancerous. They usually disappear after pregnancy, but your dentist can also help care for this issue if required.

3. Morning Sickness- Vomiting due to nausea can also negatively affect your mouth as the stomach acid from the vomit can cause extensive damage to the protective coating on the teeth.

By practicing good oral hygiene, and visiting the dentist regularly, expectant mothers also care for both the current and future health of the baby. If you have questions or concerns about what to do to protect oral health during pregnancy, please feel free to contact Dr. Johnson at The Chicago Centre for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry.

Through education and superb customer service, as your dentist for Lake Zurich and the surrounding areas, Dr. Johnson and his team will give you and your baby every reason to smile.
