Periodontics

The specialty of periodontics involves issues related to the gingiva (gums) and the supporting structures of the teeth and implants. Periodontics can be divided further into two broad sub-categories: treatment of periodontal disease and periodontal plastic surgery and reconstruction.

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gingiva, which gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Dental plaque is the primary cause of periodontal disease in genetically susceptible individuals. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons, which irritate the gingiva. They may cause them to turn red, swell and bleed easily. If this irritation is prolonged, the gingiva separate from the teeth, causing pockets (spaces) to form. Plaque can also harden into a rough, porous substance known as calculus (or tartar). This can occur both above and below the gum line. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gingival tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorates. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss. At The Chicago Center For Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry, Dr. Jackson will customize a treatment approach best suited to you, the individual, in treating the periodontal infection. Our goal is to help you keep your teeth for the rest of your life.

Periodontal plastic surgery and reconstruction involves procedures to improve the cosmetics of the gumline, prepare teeth for resorative dentistry, and replace teeth with dental implants. (Dental implants is covered in a different section.) Dr. Jackson is unique in that he has advanced training from the University of Pennsylvania in Periodontics and Periodontal Prosthesis. This means he fully understands the integral relationship of the gingiva and the dental restorations that are placed on the teeth. He realizes that to have the best cosmetic result, whether with natural teeth or implants, the gumline needs to be considered and managed.
