Millions of people use mouthwash, but have you ever wondered if it has more benefits than just giving you nice breath? Swashing minty liquid around in your mouth for thirty seconds can have real health benefits according to a recent study found in the January/February 2013 issue of General Dentistry.

The Kind of Mouth-Rinse

Some mouthwashes are meant to fight cavities while others are used for teeth whitening. The study cited above revealed, however, that a significant reduction in plaque and gingivitis was experienced by those who utilized a mouth-rinse formulated to kill germs in addition to their regular oral health routine.

What makes a germ-killing mouthwash so effective?

The lead author of the study, Christine A. Charles, RDH, BS, highlighted that “Even with regular brushing and flossing, bacteria often are left behind.” She further noted, “It’s simple. Mouth-rinses can reach nearly 100 percent of the mouth’s surfaces, while brushing focuses on the teeth, which make up only 25 percent of the mouth.”

The Results of the Study

The results of the 6 month study were quite compelling. The participants who brushed their teeth and rinsed with a germ-killing mouthwash twice a day experienced:

  • 26.3% reduction in the occurrence of plaque.
  • 20.4% reduction in gingivitis.

This highlights the oral health benefits of regular and consistent use of a germ-killing mouth-rinse. Of course, this must be carried out in co-operation with a good routine of brushing, cleaning between your teeth, and scheduling regular dental visits.
